A lounge, a bar, and the restaurant all invite patrons to relax and take in the high-spirited ambience, which is often bolstered by cabaret shows. Should you get hungry, the menu offers tasty appetizers and a range of creative, flavorful main courses. The owners also run Shame on the Moon restaurant in Rancho Mirage.

PALM SPRINGS. Sleek, contemporary Hunters ranks as one of Palm Springs' busiest nightlife venues ­ and for good reason. Talented DJs spin top hits, videos light up flat-screen TVs, and fun-loving patrons keep the good times rolling. A busy dance floor gets lots of attention, but you'll also find pool tables, computer stations for Internet surfing, and an outdoor terrace, should you need to cool down and see what's happening streetside. The clientele is typically gay men ­ but in all their diversity and range. Early in the evening, the action is subdued, but as the night wears on, the pace picks up dramatically.

Two bars, an indoor courtyard, guest DJs, and a host of special events and theme nights guarantee that there's plenty to do and see. Although the place gets heavy gay traffic, all are welcome.

NORTH PALM SPRINGS. As its name indicates, Toucan's has a jungle theme, and its relaxed attitude is a major draw for local folks. Everyone's out to have a good time, and the camaraderie is evident. Live entertainment is a signature, from go-go dancers to female impersonators and live bands. DJs often spin, and good drink specials ensure lots of business on Mondays and Tuesdays. Outdoors, two patios accommodate smokers and folks who want to escape the crowds for a moment or two. Pop-culture mavens will recognize Toucan's as the bar where the TV show "Boy Meets Boy" was taped.
