DOWNTOWN. Chockablock with retro kitsch, this festive establishment is both bar and restaurant. Fun is always on order, and strong martinis ensure that the means to sociability keep flowing. A lounge, a bar, and the restaurant all invite patrons to relax and take in the high-spirited ambience, which is often bolstered by cabaret shows. Should you get hungry, the menu offers tasty appetizers and a range of creative, flavorful main courses. The owners also run Shame on the Moon restaurant in Rancho Mirage.

PALM SPRINGS. Citron Bar, like the restaurant itself, is a sunny study of retro chic and Hollywood glam. An interplay of mirrors and white and yellow tones sets the scene, a perfect backdrop against which stylish patrons pose and mingle. Strong cocktails are de rigueur, just as you'd expect in a place that harks back to the golden era of movie-making. If you opt to forgo some of the bar chit-chat, take advantage of Citron's California cuisine, which includes steaks, seafood, grilled pork, and more.

DOWNTOWN. Balcony dining, upscale atmosphere, fabulous steaks, and a lively, classy bar scene all come together at this popular steak house. While you pore over the menu, sip a smokin' martini, so named for its addition of dry ice. Cuts of beef include a bone-in rib-eye, a porterhouse, and several weights of prime rib; for added kick, try your steak with roquefort butter or a cracked pepper, dijon, and horseradish crust. Other options include sesame-seared ahi, cioppino, and Kurobota pork short ribs.

PALM SPRINGS. Sleek, contemporary Hunters ranks as one of Palm Springs' busiest nightlife venues ­ and for good reason. Talented DJs spin top hits, videos light up flat-screen TVs, and fun-loving patrons keep the good times rolling. A busy dance floor gets lots of attention, but you'll also find pool tables, computer stations for Internet surfing, and an outdoor terrace, should you need to cool down and see what's happening streetside. The clientele is typically gay men ­ but in all their diversity and range. Early in the evening, the action is subdued, but as the night wears on, the pace picks up dramatically.

DOWNTOWN. For more than 25 years, this establishment has been one of Palm Springs' favorite places for Mexican cuisine. Dine under blooming bougainvillea and enjoy signature dishes while sipping a margarita made with one of the restaurant's more than 20 tequilas. Strolling mariachis provide music and entertainment. Also serves breakfast and a popular champagne brunch on Sunday.
